Scholarship History and Rules

The Gulf Coast Gem & Mineral Society developed a scholarship program in 2006.  This program provides $1,000 to be awarded to one individual selected from applicants during a given announcement period.  Applicants must be a junior, senior, or graduate student who has been accepted to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi or Texas A&M University-Kingsville, enrolled in Earth Sciences, who has maintained a 2.75 or above GPA. This group includes Del Mar College students who have been accepted to either of the above schools.

Applications have been reviewed for the 2017 Scholarship Program.  The winner will be announced at the September 2017 general meeting.

Russell Wheeler, President of the Gulf Coast Gem & Mineral Society, is shown presenting James P. Quisenberry a $1,000 check for the 2016 scholarship award.  James will be completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology with a minor in Geological Information Systems by May 2017 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.  Jim hopes to pursue a master’s program to specialize in 3-D seismic interpretation or petrophysics.

January 2013
Chester Scotch of Rockport and Riaz Hossain Khan of Corpus Christi were selected to receive $1,000 scholarships awarded for January 2013. Scotch’s Bachelor of Science Magna cum laude is from TAMUCC where he is a Master of Science candidate with a major in Hydrogeology-Environmental Science. Khan completed undergraduate and post graduate work at the University of Dhaka, and lectured at the Patuakhali Science and Technology University, both in Bangladesh. He is a first year Doctoral student in the TAMUCC Coastal and Marine System Science Program
